Zombies, headsets and a lot of shouting: our Outbreak VR night in Nottingham

Five of us swapped the usual pub table for a warehouse full of zombies on Wednesday evening, heading to meetspaceVR in the Old YMCA Building for their free roam VR experience, Outbreak.

If you have not tried free roam VR before, it is a fair step up from playing something at home. You get kitted out with a headset, a backpack and a gun, then you are let loose to walk around a proper arena with no wires and nothing to bump into. What you see is a city overrun with zombies, and what everyone else sees is your team wandering around a big empty room shouting warnings at each other. Both versions are very entertaining.

Adam and Sarah hosted, and having two hosts worked well for a group activity like this. There was a bit of nervous laughing during the briefing, which is normal, and then everyone got straight on with it once the headsets went on. Outbreak is built around teamwork, so you quickly end up watching each other's backs, calling out where the hordes are coming from and reloading at exactly the wrong moment. A small group of five was ideal, everyone got plenty of time in the arena and nobody was standing about waiting for a turn.

Sarah clearly caught the bug too, saying afterwards, "It was so much fun. Another event I want to do again. Next time I'm on Adams team. Need to work out his strategy to score so much higher than the rest of us!"

Once we had handed the kit back and stopped talking about who panicked first, we walked round to Pho to make the most of their Pink Wednesday offers, with food and drinks at £5. A very good way to round the night off, and it gave everyone a chance to sit down and catch up after all the running about.
