A New Book Club in Nottingham – Chapter Free
Affinity’s first Chapter Free Book Club brought members together for an evening of thoughtful conversation, shared perspectives and relaxed social connection.
Hosted by Tünde at the beautiful Cosy Club Nottingham, the setting was perfect for a book club evening. Cosy Club’s warm atmosphere and comfortable surroundings made it easy for everyone to settle in, enjoy a drink and dive into conversation.
Book clubs are one of the most enjoyable ways to bring people together. They create a starting point for discussion while allowing the conversation and personal reflections, experiences and ideas.
The Books We Discussed
One of the highlights of the evening was the variety of books that sparked conversation. Each title brought a different perspective, leading to some engaging and thoughtful discussions around storytelling, themes and the ideas behind the books.
This Way Up – Map Men
This Way Up by Jay Foreman (creator of the popular Map Men series) explores the fascinating world of maps and how they shape the way we understand geography, politics and culture.
The book blends humour with genuinely interesting insights, taking readers through historical maps, strange borders and the surprising stories behind the lines we often take for granted on a map.
During the discussion, members reflected on how maps influence our perception of countries and identity, and how something that appears simple on paper often carries centuries of political decisions and historical context. The book also sparked conversation about travel, places people have visited, and how geography influences culture.
Amsterdam – Ian McEwan
The group also explored Amsterdam by Ian McEwan, a Booker Prize–winning novel that examines friendship, rivalry and moral dilemmas.
The story follows two old friends whose relationship becomes increasingly complicated following the funeral of a former lover. What begins as a moment of shared reflection slowly turns into a series of decisions that test their values and ambitions.
Members discussed the novel’s dark humour and how McEwan builds tension through subtle character development. The conversation also touched on themes of ego, pride and how personal principles can sometimes lead people into unexpected situations.
It proved to be a book that generated strong opinions — exactly the kind of novel that works well in a book club setting.
Four Feet Under – Tamsen Courtenay
Another fascinating title discussed was Four Feet Under by Tamsen Courtenay.
The book explores themes around mortality, remembrance and the ways in which people approach the subject of death and legacy. Rather than treating the topic with heaviness, the book often approaches it with curiosity and reflection, encouraging readers to think about how societies remember people and the rituals surrounding loss.
This led to some thoughtful conversation within the group about how literature can help us approach complex or uncomfortable subjects in a more open way. Members shared different perspectives on the themes raised in the book and how the stories within it challenge the way we think about life and memory.
Why Book Clubs Work So Well at Affinity
Affinity events are designed to make it easy for people to connect and book clubs are particularly effective for this.
Book clubs provide an easy starting point. Everyone arrives with something to share, whether it’s a favourite passage, a question about a character or simply a reaction to the story.
This creates a welcoming environment where members can join the conversation at their own pace. Some enjoy deep discussion about the books themselves, while others enjoy the broader conversations that grow from them.
For many members, it’s also a chance to discover new authors, expand their reading lists and explore genres they might not normally choose.
Book Clubs in Nottingham – A Different Kind of Social Event
If you’re looking for a book club in Nottingham, gatherings like Chapter Free offer something a little different.
Rather than a formal literary group, the focus is on relaxed conversation and shared experience. You don’t need to be an academic reader or have studied literature, just an interest in books and a curiosity about other people’s perspectives.
The shared topic of books makes it easy to start conversations and connect with others who enjoy thoughtful discussion.
Hosted With Care
Tünde once again created a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the evening, helping guide the conversation and making sure everyone felt comfortable joining in.
Hosting plays an important role in Affinity events. Having someone there to welcome guests, introduce people and keep the flow of the evening relaxed makes a big difference, especially for members attending for the first time.
Looking Ahead
Affinity’s book club evenings continue to grow as more members discover the joy of combining reading with good company.
They offer a chance to slow down, share ideas and connect with others in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
If you enjoy books, conversation and discovering new perspectives, it’s a wonderful way to spend an evening.
